Virtual Vehicle


VIRTUAL VEHICLE is an international research and development center which deals with application-oriented vehicle development and future vehicle concepts for road and rail. Currently, around 200 people are employed at the location in Graz, and their expertise enables the efficient development of affordable, safe and environmentally friendly vehicles.

The goal of the center is to create a strong, permanent bond between university research and industrial development and thus to foster innovation for the industry. By participating in numerous national and international projects, the company has established itself as a desirable research partner. This has been accomplished not only through the recruitment and training of top researchers, but also by the long-term cooperation with partners from industry and science. One final objective is to promote Styria as an attractive region for international researchers and to strengthen Graz as a research location.

Research Priorities

The key areas of research and development at the VIRTUAL VEHICLE are combining numerical simulation and experimental validation and developing a comprehensive system simulation up to the complete vehicle. The current project landscape ranges from deep investigation of individual technologies (e.g. traction batteries, specific aspects of lightweight, vehicle safety) to projects dedicated to bringing together various individual aspects to create a comprehensive vehicle perspective.

International Partner Network

The international partner network of VIRTUAL VEHICLE includes more than 90 industry partners, including Audi, AVL, BMW, MAN, Porsche, Siemens and Volkswagen. In addition, we have a strong cooperative relationship with the Technical University of Graz, which has provided the scientific backbone of the centre since its foundation in the year 2002. Our exclusive group of over 30 other scientific partners includes the Karlsruher Institute of Technology, KTH Stockholm, the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, TU Munich and the Centre de Recherche Informatique de Montreal.


VIRTUAL VEHICLE is the holding company of the COMET K2 research program "K2-Mobility - Sustainable Vehicle Technologies", which is active in the field of application-oriented vehicle development. This research program ensures industrial and research projects until at least the end of 2017 and offers an attractive cooperation and research platform for the automotive industry. Apart from activities in the K2-Mobility program, VIRTUAL VEHICLE is also strongly involved in projects being conducted on the national and EU levels.

The long-term goal is to establish a funding structure that is provided in approximately equal shares by the COMET program, industry funding and other resources (e.g. EU projects).


The credo of the VIRTUAL VEHICLE is clear: New mobility concepts must be safe, efficient and affordable. To realize this vision, the center focuses its research activities on the environmental sustainability, safety affordability of mobility concepts.
